What does God say about tithing?

A post from a good pastor pointed out that is you want to get healing from God you should avoid sin. I agree with avoiding sin. Sin connects you to the curse and diseases are under the curse.  He then pointed out you needed to tithe to get Gods blessings. I belive in the first fruit blessings but when it comes to obeying law I have to put what the new testament says over what the old testament says.  I sought God on the question of tithing long ago and he brought my attention to this verse.

(A few translations listed to get the point over)

New International Version (©1984)
Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

New Living Translation (©2007)
You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

English Standard Version (©2001)
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Her is my response to him. I was trying to be respectful and really just want to see what the bible says.

his post was https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2006885187309&id=1699052736

“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

My response:

I am sending you this to make sure you see it, all though you most likely will not read it, sadly. I agree with every thing you said about sin, its sin that connects us to the curse, However obedience to the tithe is something you may have not studied out completely and you should hear me out on this one. In fact I bet you stop reading right here, most do not want to hear any other views but their own. You should hear me out though because I sought the lord out on this one and I have a very good answer and has logic that is unassailable.

It’s not the giving money it’s the “righteousness” that separates from the curse, disease is under the curse, Something no amount of obedience on your part will buy…I wasn’t tithing and I sought out righteousness. When I believed, I let out this big burp, then I had amazing peace. My asthma, allergies and hemorrhoids all vanished. Its righteousness that comes by faith. Obedience is good and a fruit of righteousness but it will never buy you righteousness.  About tithing being connected to healing how can you reconcile the verse, Each man should give WHAT HE HAS DECIDED IN HIS HEAR TO GIVE , not reluctantly or UNDER COMPULSION, for God loves a cheerful giver.http://bible.cc/2_corinthians/9-7.htm

If it’s a strict 10% you cut out this verses admonition to decide on how much to give.  If God says in the new testament that we should give not under compulsion, how can you square that with 10%. If God in the new testament gives us the right to decide in our heart, are we punished if we don’t decide 10%? IF I don’t give the 10% I am not eligible for healing? That’s the very definition of compulsion, but God tells me clearly not to give under compulsion. If God curses us for not giving the exact 10% doesn’t that negate the blood and put us under a system of law all over again? Our healing from God is then linked to our obedience. In this verse God gives us the choice to decide how much to give. He is telling us to decide. Saying God says 10% and then also says you decide what to give does not make sense. Exactly 10% is law but “each deciding what to give” is grace.  What happened when they tried to put the disciples under the law again? they said “Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?” http://bible.cc/acts/15-10.htm

God can’t command a strict 10% then in another verse tell us to only give what we decide to give. It makes God saying two things. Healing can’t come from our obedience or its works based not righteousness based. It comes by the blood of Jesus and that’s faith-based. “with a heart a man believes under righteousness” . I am pretty sure you will erase all this so I will send it in a message as well. My hands will be clean Because I told you the truth.

That’s about it. You can’t make the 10% tithe square with http://bible.cc/acts/17-11.htm

You should give to God, and the first fruits blessing applies.

When you give to God himself has asked you to only give what YOU HAVE DECIDED TO GIVE and not to give under compulsion. You can’t keep Gods command to “decide for yourself” and at the same time be obligated to the 10%.  God can’t decide 10% and then say “you decide.” He can’t say he won’t bless you if you don’t tithe, and then say “don’t give out of compulsion”.

Its new testament and that’s the end of any argument for me.

Its new testament and it supersedes all the old covenant.

Sadly you will notice that those that “push” tithing so much usually have at the same time a collection plate or an address to send the check to right after they “push” it. I am interested what God says about it.

Matt 7: 15-20 (the message translation) “Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don’t be impressed with charisma; look for character. Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned.

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! http://bible.cc/acts/8-20.htm
